Well, here’s a somewhat proposal-thing

November 3, 2008 at 5:30 pm (Ideas for Final Project) (, , , )

We aren’t getting anywhere with the ambiguity of “final project”. I don’t have a clear concept in mind, but maybe we should focus our efforts on a show. A show of primarily video, but also any other work that goes toward a point, theme, or concept that we can all somehow agree upon. In the spring semester, Sheelah’s History of Video class hosted a screening during Manifest as well as at the Nightingale theater called the New Newness. The class did their best to collect as much work from people as they could in regards to video. Then they acted as a jury and picked what would be and what wouldn’t be shown.

We could find a way around that of narrowing the scope of the show, or we could just accept everybody.

Either way, this project needs to be focused into something so we can take the next step. I know we said in class that we’d all be open to the idea of a screening or a show, but not everyone was there. Once we all agree on what we’re doing, we should pinch off a concept.

So if we did do this screening would it be for a production class of for anyone who wanted to show their work(s). How do we all feel about that?
Second, once we have a general idea on what we are doing the screening on how should we go about marketing it? I wouldn’t mind doing web/poster advertisements for the event to get to come out.
I’m just getting some ideas out there for us to work with, what do you guys think?

I think we should open the screening up to anyone we can find that wants to enter something as long as it works with our overall theme, in addition to possibly tapping the production classes as well. I just think its important to expose more experimental and video art works because of the school’s usual under-representation of the genre.
As far as a concept I kind of liked the idea of “things we hate” as it gives cohesiveness to the body of work we can show, but also leaves it open enough for variation in tone and content of the work.

Yeah, that things we hate thing is okay, but personally I would rather do something else. Talking about things I hate is something I really hate to do, but this is supposed to be a “we” thing, so whatever.
Tapping production classes is a great idea. Opening it up to everybody is going to be essential.
but I would really rather not collaborate through hating stuff. I would much rather celebrate something.
What about something that would subvert the expert, and make everyone an artist? I made tiny mention to the idea of a doodle or something like it.
